My first blog post

Its 2025 now and I have decided to try my hand at writing blog posts of my photoshoots just to document my Landscape Photography and maybe enable myself to tell the story behind the photographs.

It was the morning of the New Year and I wanted to get out to take some photo’s. I was fresh from watching a YouTube video from Thomas Heaton, he was saying he’s usual stuff and telling people to get out and shoot. Feeling inspired I started to find a few locations to shoot and check the weather forecast on my phone. I haven’t been to Teignmouth for a while and the weather looked good for Friday. Although at this stage I should have checked the Tide Times as well, I didn’t and had I did I might have gone somewhere else.

Morning of the Shoot

Packing my bag, I took the Nikon D600 with the Nikkor 70-300m f/4.5-5.6 VR G and Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC OS along with my Circular Polarizer filter. I headed to the location leaving home around 4:30am.

The Shoot

I got the location nearly an hour before sunrise and already I could see the pre-dawn orange colour on the horizon and I set about looking for composition. Like I mentioned I wanted to get down to the beach below but due to high tide I couldn’t but I didn’t let this set me back.

Marker V2

My first shot was based on another image I took back in 2019 as I was interested if the orange sky would make it look better. Setting up lower down to try and get the groyne into the sky. I went for a faster shutter speed than before as I wanted to keep some texture in the ocean and there was mist rising from the ocean in the background.

Teignmouth Grand Pier

The scene was amazing that morning, mist rising from the ocean, the light and bright orange skies of the rising sun. Opting for this wide angle shot of the pier including the gyones.

Pier Damage

My third shot was of the end of Teignmouth Pier set against the rising mist and orange sky. It was the visible damage to the pier that peaked my interest for the shot.

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 shot @ 28mm 1/5 sec / f/9.0 / ISO 100

Pier Morning

The light wasn’t going to catch on the pier but that didn’t mean that there was images, again I would have loved to be lower down on the beach for this shot but I still feel it works.

In Closing

I really enjoyed the morning and came away a few good pictures that I am happy with. Namely, Marker V2 and Teignmouth Grand Pier. I cannot wait to get my car as getting to these places this early in the morning is rather problematic and would allow me to explore different more remote places. On the train ride home I noticed a number of locations that I would have loved to explore even more so because of the frosty cold conditions. But this is more inspiration for me to do this. Any way, I am making the Teignmouth Grand Pier image available as a print. If this is something that you are interested in then please contact me for more information.
